Congressman Morgan McGarvey Slams DOJ’s Reported Halt to Consent Decrees, Review of Recent Agreements Like Louisville's
Decision Could Impact Consent Decree Between Louisville Metro Government and the DOJ, Which Was Finalized 42 Days Ago on December 12, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 23, 2025) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) slammed new reports that the Trump Department of Justice is planning to halt police reform agreements and review recent agreements – such as Louisville's consent decree – that were finalized in the last 90 days. Louisville’s consent decree was finalized 42 days ago.
“The Trump Administration is clearing the way to strike down Louisville's consent decree, a decision that will make all Louisvillians less safe. Our community has spent almost four years having difficult conversations and doing the hard work to reach an agreement that will take our city forward and help restore the community’s trust in the police department. Striking down Louisville's consent decree would be a major step back in our fight for racial justice and would be deeply frustrating to our entire community,” said Rep. Morgan McGarvey.
“Let’s be clear: Louisville’s agreement has been reached and does not require further involvement from the Department of Justice. Judge Beaton should approve this agreement without any further delay,” added Rep. McGarvey.
